Instrumental Pedagogy

As a clarinet player, I did not feel the way I was taught altissimo ranges made sense pedagogically and it took me a long time to feel comfortable with the fingerings. My "Clarinet Yoga" exercises attempt to remedy this in a number of ways. Geared for younger players, the series will begin with basic long tone stability in the chalumeau register. Once these notes are clear and vibrant, students move on to basic register slurs, employing use of the pinky fingerings. At that point, students should have the foundation to go beyond the break easily. Exercise 2 not only make it easy, but encourage students to explore the third partial of the instrument. This exercise in particular also introduces students to the concept of adding keys to modify notes to make them more in tune.
